Mary has been fondly called a "little monkey" by her family since she was a kid, for her mischievous nature and penchant for climbing trees. As a teen, Mary and her best girlfriend nicknamed one another "Monkeywoman" during an opera training program where they spent most of their free time clambering around on rooftops of San Francisco, imitating monkey calls, and generally causing a ruckus.

In college, Mary sewed herself various superhero costumes for such occasions as Halloween, or just those bored-on-a-Friday-night-with-nothing-better-to-do-than-run-around-campus-in-spandex-and-freak-people-out evenings. (She DID go to college in Oberlin, Ohio...it was either that or hanging out at Wal Mart...) At some point (probably after getting in trouble for climbing around on ladders backstage during an opera rehearsal), she conceived the idea for her simian superhero, thinking it would make a fun, fruity take on the whole genre.

Fast forward several years to February of 2006, when Mary spotted the casting notice for "Who Wants to be a Superhero?" and did a handspring out of her chair with excitement. She was all over it like ugly on an ape, and spent many hours filling out the application, developing the character of Monkey Woman more fully, making the infamous banana-intensive costume, and auditioning for the show.

Mary is so thrilled to have had this opportunity to bring Monkeywoman to life and to be a part of the show! She is grateful to Stan Lee, Scott Satin, and everyone in production and at the network who made this possible. And she is deeply moved by all the enthusiasm and support she's gotten from fans of the show, and would like to thank everyone from the bottom of her little monkey heart!
